Gold Top Tube 

Gold Top Tube or SST tubes

- It is also known as Serum separating tube (SST) 

Anti coagulant - No ( Absent)

Contain two agents - 

1) Silica Particle : It is activated clotting and cause blood cells to clump together.

2) Serum separator : Inert gel which is separate serum and blood cells.

Mode of Action - Serum separated by gel.

Use :- 

Endocrinology,oncology,toxicology, microbiology, immunology

Some tests done by this tube are : 

Urea , Tumour markers

Bone profile (Calcium, Po4 , ALP)

CRP , Immunoglobulin

LFT , Electrolytes ( Na,K,Ca,Iron)

Albumin , Troponin , RA factor, etc.

Light Yellow Top Tube

Anti coagulant - ACD (Acid Citrate Dextrose)

Mode of action - Complement Inactivation.

Use :-

- Blood bank
- Blood culture
- HLA Phenotypic
- Paternity testing

Mode of action - Formation of calcium salt and removal of calcium.

Use :-

CBC , PTH, HBA1C , ESR , Reticulocyte
Blood smear, Red cell folate,
Electrophoresis,etc...

Note : Mix well with EDTA.

Use :- Used for molecular diagnosis 

 Like, PCR, DNA amplification

It is also known as pasma separating tube (PST).

It is contain gel which separate plasma and blood cells.

Anti coagulant - Lithium heparin

Mode of action - Inactivate thrombin and thromboplastin.

Use :-

- Used for heparinized plasma separation.

- Used in routine chemistry test.

- To check ammonia level.

- In Cytogenetic studies.
